Quinnipiac’s Rink Ranked High

CENTERBROOK, Conn. -- The New England Hockey Journal has ranked Quinnipiac University’s hockey arena, designed by Centerbrook, as among the six best in the region along with Yale Ingall’s rink. Joshua Cummins writes, “The hockey facility, officially called High Point Solutions Arena, seats slightly over 3,000 [3,286] and … every game night, the arena comes alive with students clad in gold T-shirts and an excellent local crowd. It also served as a very successful host of the 2014 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four [national championship] won by Clarkson in late March.”

The Quinnipiac rink is one of two arenas ⎯ the other with 3,570 seats for basketball ⎯ housed in the TD Bank Sports Center. Each facility has completely unobstructed sight lines from all seats thanks to three-dimensional roof trusses with 164-foot clear spans. Opened in 2007 the Center was the first building to be built on the university’s newly developed York Hill Campus.

Centerbrook received two design awards for the project, from American School and University Magazine and from AIA Connecticut/Business New Haven Magazine. Previously, veteran Boston Globe sports columnist and ESPN commentator Bob Ryan had ranked the basketball arena as the best collegiate facility in New England and during national telecasts ESPN hockey commentator Barry Melrose had praised the ambiance of the hockey arena.
