Simon to Present at Educational Conference

Centerbrook Partner Mark Simon will be a keynote speaker at a three-day “Boys as Makers Conference” being held at the University School, a K-12 independent school for boys in Hunting Valley, Ohio.

The conference will focus on how male students benefit from hands-on, experiential approaches to learning, both inside and outside the classroom. It runs from April 8-10 and is sponsored by the International Boys’ Schools Coalition.

Simon, FAIA, led a Centerbrook team that designed the new science and academic wing at University School, including its Manual Arts and Design Center where high school students use state of the art technology to develop and create everything from robots to cell phone apps.

“University School has a long craft tradition, of students making things with their hands,” said Simon. “So one of the things we did with the new classroom building was to use materials that show how the various pieces fit, how they are made and function. We also designed a wide variety of spaces for making things, from classrooms to workshops. In essence, the building itself is a teacher.”

Simon is the keynote presenter on Friday, April 10 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
