Suffield Academy is a private day and boarding school. Its Perry Gymnasium, built in 1953 and expanded in 1964, was an outdated and underutilized facility. Centerbrook was asked to prepare a Master Plan for athletic facilities that included a new fitness center.

Centerbrook's design renovates a lounge and trophy room into separate weight room and cardiovascular training areas. New finishes and equipment give the weight room a lively appearance. Glass partitions and mirrored surfaces create spaces with greater transparency and reflectiveness. The existing trophy room is sub-divided to create the cardiovascular training room and a lobby which serves as a social space during breaks. The renovated lobby of Perry provides an accessible entrance for the handicapped, fire safety upgrades, and a brighter, more inviting appearance. The lobby spaces are outfitted with benches, restored trophy cases, and team plaques describing the rich history of athletics at Suffield Academy.

With this new fitness center, Suffield Academy gains a popular student social space on campus, a new center of activity used on nights and weekends. It also serves an attractive recruiting tool, impressive to prospective students and parents.
