Working at Centerbrook

Centerbrook’s highly collaborative team environment promotes professional and personal development that is intrinsic to making fine works of architecture.

History

Established in 1975, Centerbrook is one of America’s leading architectural firms. Recipient of the American Institute of Architects “Firm of the Year” award for exceptional design and innovative collaborative methods, we focus on design excellence and environmental responsibility across a wide range of work including educational, institutional, cultural, and single-family residences. We have been practicing ‘green’ architecture for over 45 years. Our 19th century mill complex is a sustainable laboratory powered in part by two solar arrays, a pond-source geothermal system, and a hydro-power turbine.

Culture

Located midway between Boston and New York, Centerbrook's studio is situated on a waterfall. Employees enjoy easy access to walking and running trails, biking, kayaking, fishing, and ice skating in the winter. There is a wellness and yoga room as well as locker room facilities on site. Monthly breakfasts and happy hours, summer and holiday parties, themed gala celebrations, weekly informal Sugar Cube presentations, and seasonal athletics are all Centerbrook traditions. Each year, exceptional employees receive a Travel Grant to explore architecture beyond our region and present their impressions to the office. Others are invited to participate in the Centerbrook Chairshop where, guided by our in-house craftsmen, they design and fabricate their own chair.

Professional Development

Our staff, which hails from seven countries, has an average sixteen years of experience in the profession and ten years at Centerbrook. We work in teams and encourage all members to be creative collaborators. Our principals design their own projects, allowing close contact with staff and clients.

Because we design projects of varying types and sizes, architectural employees often work on several at the same time. When we assign projects, we balance their experience with each job’s staffing needs and our overall workload. Our goal is to help our employees develop into well rounded professionals with experience in all aspects of design and construction. We encourage, support, and incentivize staff to pursue professional licensure. We provide in-house seminars on technology and management, visits to construction sites, and a wide variety of product and technical training.

Resources

We employ a full-time model maker, a materials researcher, and a shop drawing administrator who support our architectural staff, as well as marketing, publicity, graphic design, administrative, and accounting departments. Two IT professionals support our technology infrastructure and provide software training and best practices. We produce all construction documents, renderings, fly-throughs, and physical models in house. Our staff have access to the latest model-making technology, including a laser cutter, a CNC router, and three 3D printers. We also maintain a fully outfitted woodworking and fabrication shop.

Support

Centerbrook seeks to attract bright minds from all cultural and economic backgrounds. Our best work comes from a wide range of experiences, expertise, and imaginative talents, and we strive to cultivate a welcoming, respectful, and encouraging community. An HR Team and DEI Committee actively support our mission to foster a studio that is made by and for all.
