Big Pride, Bigger Graphics
The graphics at Bryant University’s new Navigant Credit Union Field House were never meant to be just decorative overlays. From the outset, we treated branding as a cohesive spatial idea to boost school spirit, excite recruits, and energize athletes and fans. Integrating graphics and branding with the architecture helped the building deliver these goals, from its entry plaza to the locker rooms.
After immersing ourselves in Bryant’s visual identity, we landed on a simple cue: the italic slant of the Bryant University wordmark. A 15-degree angle became an organizing device that shaped patterns, typography, locker graphics, and wayfinding throughout the building. We liked how the forward angle’s sense of motion mimicked athletic performance and subtly unified spaces that serve different functions.
Our graphics also reinterpret Bryant’s brand language at multiple scales. A repeating pattern drawn from the interior of the “B” logo animates gathering spaces, while an oversized bulldog mascot creates a charged, immersive hype portal from the football locker room out to the field. Fight song lyrics appear overhead, alumni achievements line corridors, and brick patterns in the entry plaza reference the cadence of Bryant’s fight song. These fresh yet recognizable gestures evolve Bryant’s visual identity.
Early concept
To further complement the architecture, the placement of our graphics respond to circulation, scale, and light. A long corridor uses continuous imagery to draw athletes through it, carefully sized figures provide human scale in large volumes, and materials were selected so Bryant’s black-and-gold palette reads true across matte and glossy finishes. In many spaces, color blocking, flooring, and material choices double as graphic expression, further embedding the branding within the architecture.
Our graphics contribute to the Field House’s role as both a game-day destination and a recruiting showcase. Motivational messaging supplied by coaches and players activates locker rooms and training spaces, while branded lounges and gathering areas encourage connection and celebration. The result is a facility that reflects the energy and excitement of Bryant Athletics.
Seeing graphics and architecture as one idea allows the Field House to carry Bryant pride throughout the building, inspiring athletes and community alike.
