Centerbrook Awarded Three Green Building Awards

Centerbrook Architects and Planners received three awards in the 2026 Green Building Impact Awards program. The firm received two Honor Awards and one Merit Award, underscoring its leadership in sustainable design and environmental stewardship across Connecticut.

Presented by BuildGreenCT, the annual program recognizes projects that demonstrate excellence in green building practices, with a focus on energy performance, resilience, and occupant well-being.

“We’re grateful to BuildGreenCT for recognizing these projects,” said Centerbrook Principal Jim Childress, FAIA. “Sustainability is integral to how we think about design from the start. These buildings are intended to perform efficiently, endure over time, and create meaningful, engaging places for people to enjoy.”

Centerbrook’s award-winning projects were the Yale Peabody Museum and the Whittingham Discovery Center, both of which received Honor Awards, and the New Canaan Library, which earned a Merit Award.

Honor Award: Yale Peabody Museum, New Haven, Connecticut

The renewal of the Yale Peabody Museum is its first major update since 1925, achieving LEED Gold certification. A new high-performance envelope and efficient mechanical systems reduce energy use by nearly 50 percent, despite significant added space. The project incorporates stormwater management systems, durable natural materials, and improved daylighting, supporting both building performance and the visitor experience while preserving the museum’s historic character.

Honor Award: Whittingham Discovery Center, Stamford, Connecticut

The LEED Platinum Whittingham Discovery Center is designed for low energy use and long-term resilience. High-performance systems and a rooftop solar array reduce energy demand well below baseline levels. Sustainable materials, green roofs, and on-site stormwater management strategies integrate the building into Mill River Park while supporting year-round community use.

Merit Award: New Canaan Library, New Canaan, Connecticut

The New Canaan Library expands usable space while significantly lowering energy use. The all-electric building operates far below baseline energy levels and is supported in part by on-site solar. Durable materials, efficient systems, and a landscape designed for stormwater absorption and habitat support contribute to long-term performance and user comfort.

Presented annually, the BuildGreenCT Green Building Impact Awards lauds advanced sustainable design, construction innovation, and environmental responsibility. Since 2006, the program has promoted Connecticut buildings that contribute to healthier communities, improved resource efficiency, and greater climate resilience.
