Centerbrook Projects Featured in New Book

CENTERBROOK, Conn. -- Two green roofs designed by Centerbrook are profiled in a new book, “Green Walls Green Roofs: Designing Sustainable Architecture,” edited by Gina Tsarouhas and available from Images Publishing.

The green roof for an addition to the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Andover Academy in Massachusetts serves both aesthetic and environmental purposes, softening the view out of the glass curtain wall and mitigating rainwater runoff. The grassy expanse also does double duty as outdoor exhibit space for glass sculptures by Dale Chihuly.

The green roof for the Hotchkiss School Biomass Facility helps the building mesh with its surroundings, mediating between forest and open grassland. It absorbs and filters rainwater before returning it to the environment through a series of bio-swales and rain gardens. The heating plant was designed to be an ancillary classroom, providing students with real world lesson in responsible design and development.

Centerbrook Partners Chad Floyd, FAIA, and Jefferson B. Riley, FAIA, led the respective design teams for the Addison and Hotchkiss projects. Centerbrook received a Merit Award for Addison and an Honor Award for Hotchkiss from AIA New England.
