Centerbrook Projects Receive International Praise
Three Centerbrook projects have received an International Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: an advanced theatre for Lancaster Country Day School; an expanded dining facility for Miss Porter’s School; and a reimagined destination resort in Rhode Island.
Lancaster Country Day School’s new Gardner Theater, located in in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is advanced, with 580 seats, an orchestra pit, state-of-the-art lighting and acoustics, and fly space. With a full-sized stage and professional theatre fittings, the facility hosts the school’s musical and theatrical performances, graduation, and lectures. Its acoustics support a full range of shows, while technical elements are designed so students can participate in theatrical production.
Located in an historic district in Farmington, Connecticut, Miss Porter School’s iconic entry building, 60 Main, was renewed to better serve modern-day life. The project relocates a historic staircase to widen the corridor from the main entrance to the dining hall. The dining hall was expanded by 40-percent to seat 400, which enables sit-down dinners for the entire school. Floor-to-ceiling glass offers expansive views of surrounding hills and the ceremonial central campus lawn.
Rhode Island’s Shepherd’s Run is the adaptive reuse of a former boarding school into a boutique resort hotel. The project reimagined a 1930’s Norman Romanesque stone manor house, as well as a sanctuary and residential buildings added in the 1960’s. Visitors are now graced with outdoor gathering spaces that include a formal courtyard for weddings and special events, firepits, meadows, and a vineyard. A bar, restaurant, and events hall spill onto the courtyard, overlooking a tributary of Narragansett Bay.
Organized by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design in collaboration with The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and Metropolitan Arts Press, The International Architecture Awards has been honoring global excellence in architecture and urbanism since 2004. Each year, new developments in corporate, institutional, commercial, residential, interiors, and urban planning design are awarded for built and unbuilt projects. All three projects were previous recipients of The Chicago Athenaeum’s American Architecture Awards.
