Centerbrook’s Tennis Center Earns USTA Outstanding Facility Award
Centerbrook Architects & Planners’ design of the Michael W. and Quirsis V. Riney Family Tennis Center at Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS) has received a 2026 USTA Outstanding Facility Award in the Educational Institutions category. The national award recognizes excellence in tennis facility design, construction, and renovation, honoring facilities that advance the sport while enhancing player experience. One of only a select number of facilities nationwide in 2026, the project was honored for excellence in tennis facility design, construction, and community impact.
Completed in June 2025, the project transformed MICDS’s aging 15-court asphalt tennis complex into a high-performance, universally accessible 12-court facility designed to serve students from introductory physical education through elite varsity competition and beyond.

Working with BSI Constructors, Centerbrook replaced deteriorated asphalt courts with three batteries of post-tensioned concrete courts arranged on a single, continuous plane. The reconfigured site eliminates a 24-inch elevation change that previously separated the three court tiers, establishing seamless circulation and universal accessibility for players, coaches, officials, and spectators.
The design reinforces MICDS's commitment to integrating athletics into its broader educational mission. Tennis is a no-cut sport that engages more than 100 student-athletes annually, and the facility serves as a venue for physical education classes, team practices, interscholastic competitions, clinics, camps, and tournaments.
“Our goal as a coaching staff was to design a venue that elevates the MICDS Tennis program while also giving back to the broader St. Louis tennis community," said MICDS Tennis coaches Patrick Huewe and Brad Heinemann. "Whether we're hosting high school championships, introducing tennis to local youth, or teaching tennis in P.E. classes, the Riney Family Tennis Center has created a seamless environment where players, coaches, and spectators feel like one unified team."

Beyond serving the MICDS community, the Riney Family Tennis Center expands opportunities for regional competition, youth development, and community engagement. Through its partnership with Net Rushers, MICDS supports tennis instruction and camps for underserved youth. The facility also hosts middle school championships, district and sectional tournaments, and the regional Tournament of Champions, with the potential to attract future USTA junior, adult, and wheelchair events.
Winners were recognized at an awards ceremony during the 2026 US Open in New York.
