Construction Underway on Museum of American Impressionism
WESTERLY, RI – Construction is underway on Centerbrook’s design for a museum of art that adapts an abandoned physical rehabilitation facility with new galleries and restored landscapes, creating a cultural destination in a dramatic waterfront setting.
The 20,000-square-foot building is located on the Pawcatuck River between downtown Westerly and the enclave of Watch Hill. Its 13 galleries will house a private collection of American Impressionist paintings that include works by several notable artists, including an all-women’s group founded in 1917. Discretely framed riverfront views presented alongside the paintings will enliven the viewing experience. The structure also accommodates a museum shop, offices, patron services, and an events pavilion.
The project, which was recently profiled in The Westerly Sun, is slated to open in the fall of 2024.
