New Canaan Library a Finalist for International Design Award

New Canaan Library has been named one of the three best new public libraries in the world as a finalist for the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions' (IFLA) Public Library of the Year award. The award recognizes libraries that demonstrate excellence across six key criteria: interaction with surroundings and local culture, architectural quality, flexibility, sustainability, learning and social connection, and digitization and technical solutions.

According to IFLA's assessment, "The New Canaan Library ticks all the boxes of what makes a really great and welcoming new library for an entire community. The programming of the building gives you a feeling of a nice, light, and welcoming public living room, where the local citizens can meet up for various activities. There simply seems to be something for everyone."

“This international recognition is a testament to the extraordinary collaboration, vision, and dedication that shaped a new future for New Canaan Library. To be included among this global shortlist is a profound honor.” Ellen Sullivan Crovatto, Chief Executive Officer, New Canaan Library

The library has been praised for reflecting New Canaan’s mid-century modern architecture with locally quarried stone and a thoughtful connection to the community. Its open, flexible framework is built at a human scale, with seamless links to outdoor spaces — designed by the award-winning landscape architecture firm STIMSON — and inviting views of the vibrant downtown.

The building demonstrates exceptional commitment to environmental responsibility, incorporating energy-efficient systems, renewable energy sources, eco-friendly materials, and durable furnishings designed for years of community use. The interior design emphasizes natural light and materials, creating what IFLA describes as a "classically modern and neutral palette."

"Our design was guided at every step by the needs and aspirations of our community," said New Canaan Library Chief Executive Officer Ellen Sullivan Crovatto. "We’re deeply grateful to our architectural partners at Centerbrook for translating that vision into a beautiful and functional reality that facilitates the excellent work of our library team."

The library's flexible design allows spaces to be easily modified for various functions and activities, supporting everything from individual study to community programming and maker activities. The design balances the diverse needs of different age groups and learning formats.

"We're incredibly honored by this international recognition," said Centerbrook Principal Jim Childress, FAIA. "We wanted to create a true community living room — a place that would feel like home for all residents, imbued with New Canaan’s notable architectural legacy. This finalist selection validates our commitment to sustainable, human-centered design."

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions represents library and information services worldwide. The winner of the Public Library of the Year award will be announced on August 18th at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Astana, Kazakhstan.
