Quinnipiac Medical School Opens

CENTERBROOK, Conn. – The Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine, at Quinnipiac University’s North Haven, Conn. Campus, opened in August, 2013. It welcomed 60 students from the class of 2017 to its new facility, the second phase of a $100 million Center for Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences designed by Centerbrook Architects.

On a recent tour, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said, “The degree of engineering and architecture and attention to detail that has gone into this facility is quite remarkable; what’s inside, as far as the latest modern equipment, is also impressive.”

“We are, once again, proud to assist Quinnipiac in building on its strength in the health sciences,” said Centerbrook Partner Jefferson B. Riley, FAIA. “This new Center was designed to facilitate the cross-disciplinary collaboration that is so critical to the medical profession today. We also designed it to be a sociable and restorative home-away-from-home for students logging long, intensive hours toward their degree, a home that is uplifting and celebrates life and well-being.”

The School of Medicine project required the reconfiguration of and addition to an existing 140,000-square-foot office building that connects on three floors with its two sister schools, the School of Health Sciences and the School of Nursing. These, too, are housed in an existing office building renovated in Phase One completed two years ago. All three schools now share a formal grand entrance housed in the new addition that links the two existing buildings. In addition to a main lobby that affords access to an auditorium, two lecture halls, several seminar/team study rooms, and a 24/7 study space, the new addition also houses the airy and naturally lit Medical Library on its top floor. An outdoor terrace and multiple vegetated roofs provide open air amenities seldom found in medical schools.

The Medical School will focus on primary care and global health, and will join Yale University and the University of Connecticut as the third such institution in Connecticut. Centerbrook has designed more than fifty buildings and renovation projects at Quinnipiac since 1978.

Founded in 1929 as a two-year college, today Quinnipiac is a major university with 5,700 undergraduates and 2,500 graduate students. National rankings place it in the top tier of American universities and frequently cite the allure of its campus and modern facilities.
