Three Centerbrook Projects Honored

CENTERBROOK, Conn. – Three Centerbrook designed projects received recognition recently: the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy Andover, Horace Mann School’s John Dorr Nature Laboratory, and the Bellarmine Museum of Art at Fairfield University.

The Addison Gallery in Massachusetts garnered a Historic Preservation Award for its recent “restoration and sympathetic addition to the historic museum.” The award is given out jointly by the Andover Preservation Commission, the Andover Historical Society, and the Ballardvale Historic District Commission. Centerbrook expanded and restored the Addison, which houses one of the most important collections of American art in the nation. The 13,770-square-foot, three-story expansion adds a progressive presence to the 1931 Georgian Revival building.

Centerbrook won a merit award from the Connecticut Green Building Council for the John Dorr Nature Laboratory, a 287-acre environmental campus in Washington, Connecticut. The new 19,000-square-foot complex includes a Lodge and an adjoining barn that houses a classroom, wet lab and two faculty apartments. The rustic style building is designed to enhance Dorr’s programs and to reflect its commitment to environmental awareness with its use of renewable resources. The project also has been certified LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Connecticut Building Congress honored The Bellarmine Museum with a “team award” as an example of “outstanding building projects that exemplify project team excellence and represent the building owners, architects, engineers, and constructors.” Petra Construction Corp. of North Haven was the building contractor. The New York Times wrote that the design “required unconventional creativity” by the architects and quoted Emily Rafferty, President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “I think they’ve done a really splendid job. They’ve attended to every detail.”
