Three Centerbrook Projects Honored with Sustainability Award
Three Centerbrook projects – a renovated and expanded natural history museum in New Haven, a new learning center and event space in Stamford’s Mill River Park, and a new public library and community green in New Canaan – have been recognized by the Chicago Athenaeum with a Green Good Design Award. The award celebrates design that prioritizes energy conservation and fosters global ecological restoration and repair.
The Yale Peabody Museum's 100-year-old building received comprehensive renovations and additions that include state-of-the-art mechanical systems, a fully insulated exterior envelope, bird-friendly glazing, and an abundance of natural light. Certified LEED Gold, it was designed to use 50 percent less energy than before, despite adding more than 55,000-square-feet of new conditioned space.
The Whittingham Discovery Center, a new community gathering venue in a 31-acre urban park, boasts all-electric mechanical systems, high performance glazing, and a rooftop solar array. Certified LEED Platinum, the building will use 57.5% less energy compared to the ASHRAE 90.1-2010 baseline. It serves as a learning and development center for programs about integrating nature into the city, and features signage detailing its sustainable strategies as a learning tool.
New Canaan Library encourages lifelong learning while demonstrating sustainable living and inclusive design. It replaces a similar-sized building but increased the useable space by 30% while using less energy. It is all electric, with an Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 17, which is 89% lower than the baseline. A photovoltaic array provides up to 50% of its power. A central campus overlooking downtown, it increases green space by 25%. The library was a pilot project for Design for Freedom, a movement seeking to eliminate modern slavery from construction supply chains.
The Green Good Design Awards program is a specialized edition of the original Good Design program, founded in Chicago in 1950 by Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames. A jury of internationally recognized design leaders selected over 200 new projects as outstanding examples of green design. They encompass architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, products, packaging, and graphic designs from 30 nations.
