When Past and Future Meet

Centerbrook’s antique mill complex recently hosted fifth graders from Essex Elementary School, who visited to learn about the industries that have called our place home for more than 300 years.

Led by Melissa Josefiak, Executive Director of the Essex Historical Society, the students and their chaperones were encouraged to think like historians. They sketched the mill infrastructure and our fish ladder and answered worksheet questions that referenced what they saw as well as virtual lessons led by Melissa this spring.

We see our riverfront home as both a cradle of innovation and a center for lifelong learning. To kindle a fire of curiosity in the next generation is really gratifying and gives us hope for the future.
