Work to Begin on Mercersburg Academy's Student Center

CENTERBROOK, Conn. -- Centerbrook’s design for the Student Center at Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, encompasses three additions and a new southern entry. These include two new dining rooms, a student grill, and a glassy, oval-shaped student lounge. Among the spaces being renovated or reconfigured are the entry lobby, a post office, store, offices, a game space, a meeting room, and storage areas.

Centerbrook’s new oval-shaped pavilion will sit atop a stone terrace in a dramatic architectural expression that takes full advantage of site topography and a panoramic view of the school’s playing fields. The resulting juxtaposition of new and old will yield a modern, dynamic accent without overwhelming the existing neo-Georgian dining hall, designed by Marion Simms Wyeth in 1962.

Centerbrook partner Chad Floyd, FAIA, leads the design team. Centerbrook also developed a preliminary plan for a glassy new Alumni Hall.

Mercersburg is a prestigious co-ed school with 430 boarding and day students. It counts among its notable alumni seven Rhodes scholars, four recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, one Nobel laureate, and actor Jimmy Stewart.
