Community Commons

Located on a 33-acre suburban campus, Kingswood Oxford’s renovated dining hall and library are reimagined as a new Community Commons, a vibrant center for gathering, learning, and daily life. The project transforms two existing program spaces into a shared civic interior that strengthens connection across the school community.

A new arrival and entry sequence opens to a double-height living room with warm wood paneling and relaxed furnishings, creating an inviting first impression. Glass study rooms, a central lounge, an expanded dining hall, and the library are arranged as a connected ensemble, establishing a clear and active heart for the campus. An elliptical coffered ceiling with cove lighting and carved acoustic felt panels introduces both identity and performance, with the school’s Wyvern mascot subtly revealed in the patterning.

The library supports a range of learning styles through curated collections, a fireplace reading room, a flexible presentation space, a multi-functional classroom, and smaller collaborative and individual study areas. The expanded dining hall opens to campus views through glass walls, and a new servery streamlines food service while allowing the room to function as an assembly space outside lunch periods. A new patio extends the Commons outdoors, broadening opportunities for dining, gathering, and student life.
