Jewish Community Center of Southwest Florida

The new Jewish Community Center of Southwest Florida was designed as a modern descendant of Floridian tradition from the past two centuries. Openings are shielded from the harsh sun with southfacing screens, like old shutters. Catenary curves and arches recall the heyday of Miami Beach ‘moderne’. Groundwater is used abundantly.

At its core is a great arched interior court leading to the many venues with surrounding arcades, balconies, and stairs. The grand space is embellished with tiles, a great central fountain, and trellised skylights.

Entry to the complex is dramatic — visitors cross a reflecting pool to a great entry arch. On the far side a back porch arch and café look out to ponds and Floridian hammock, lushly planted with picturesque vistas and tranquil places to jog, walk, talk, or meditate.

At the south end an open air amphitheater can stage concerts and outdoor entertainment. At the north end is a day care center with its own entry adjacent to a day camp pavilion that leads to the playing fields, swimming pools, and tennis courts.
