The Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy

The design preserves and restores the historic fabric while introducing contemporary interventions that support museum use. New galleries are woven into and around the existing structures, allowing visitors to experience the site as both artifact and place of interpretation. Exhibits developed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates accommodate a range of formats and emphasize the intertwined lives of Stevens and Smith, presenting their partnership as a human story that resonates with contemporary audiences.

Universal accessibility is central to the design. Inspired in part by Stevens’ own experience with limited mobility, the project integrates inclusive strategies throughout, ensuring that circulation, interpretation, and programming are accessible to the widest possible audience. Contemporary systems are introduced discreetly, maintaining the character of the historic buildings while meeting the environmental and technical requirements of a modern museum.

The Center is conceived as both a place of interpretation and a setting for community engagement. Circulation is intuitive and layered, guiding visitors between historic interiors and new spaces while revealing the site’s stories. Gathering spaces support education, research, and public programs, reinforcing the museum’s role as a civic anchor and a place for dialogue.
