Whittingham Discovery Center
Centerbrook partnered with the Mill River Park Collaborative to design a new community gathering venue in the 31-acre Mill River Park in downtown Stamford. The park was created to provide a new model for redefining urban life and attracting residents who want to work and live in close proximity without sacrificing their quality of life. Stamford is home to many corporate headquarters and its downtown has experienced substantial residential development.
Mill River Park Collaborative
Centerbrook’s design will establish an icon in the park to attract visitors to a vibrant community place. The building will serve as a learning and development center for Mill River Park’s educational programs about integrating nature into the city. It will also provide a dramatic space for special events and support the daily operations of the park itself.
Its environmental science labs will be equipped with advanced technology and feature interactive exhibits. Located near walking trails along the Mill River, the Center will preside over a public plaza and an open-air skating rink and fountain. Its roofs will be clad with photovoltaic panels and a green roof that will serve as an outdoor events space. A café will provide gracious outdoor seating.
