World Economics Learning Lab

Centerbrook was commissioned by the Chappaqua Central School District, a nationally recognized suburban public school system, to create a technologically advanced World Economics Learning Lab and an outdoor classroom at its Horace Greeley High School.

The “W.E.L.L.” transforms three classrooms into a multifaceted center for business education. Centerbrook’s conceptual design welcomes students with a video wall flanked by columns, adorned with patterns referencing 12-bit digital number segments, and study nooks carved into the hallway. Classroom walls were modified to create three zones housing a trading floor flanked by a flexible-use room and a board room. Equipped with a stock ticker set into the ceiling, the trading floor features Bloomberg terminals at its perimeter and tables that can be reconfigured for small group work. The flexible-use room can be divided with a movable wall, and the board room, to mimic a corporate setting, is appointed with wood paneling, recessed LED lighting, and a conference table.

The design also envisions a dynamic new outdoor classroom adjacent to the W.E.L.L.. Defined by perimeter plantings set in a low brick wall and a dark metal shade structure, its durable furniture can be arranged in myriad groupings to suit their use. The outdoor classroom overlooks two solar arrays with stanchions and panels recalling tree trunks and canopies.

Centerbrook’s photorealistic 3D renderings will be used to inspire donors to support a fundraising campaign by the Chappaqua School Foundation for design and construction.

“[Centerbrook's] openness to feedback and willingness to make adjustments resulted in a design that exceeded our expectations and enhanced our vision in ways we had not initially considered.” Adam S. Pease, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction
